If you are experiencing back pain, you are not alone; it is estimated that 70-90% of the population will experience low back pain at some point in their life.

Whether it is a new/repeat onset of acute back pain, or the limiting and persisting symptoms of chronic pain, we will work with you to get you moving while also getting to the core of what is contributing to your flare ups for an ongoing management plan.

Neck pain is a condition our physiotherapists treat regularly in the clinic. Spending long periods of time looking at computer screens, reading, or using our phones can result in postural neck pain. It could also be traumatic - whiplash from a car accident or a blow to the head/neck in sport. No matter how you have ended up in pain, your Physio will carefully assess and work with you to settle the condition and return you to normal.

Your neck pain may also be accompanied by headaches or shoulder pain. With thorough consideration of your symptoms and assessment, we can achieve the best outcome for you in a timely manner. For more information on the treatment of headaches, click here.

What you can expect from your Physio if you have Back/Neck Pain:

  • Comprehensive Assessment: Our physiotherapists begin by conducting a comprehensive assessment to understand the root causes of your back or neck pain. Through a detailed examination, they identify contributing factors such as muscle imbalances, posture issues, or underlying injuries. This assessment forms the foundation of your tailored treatment plan.

  • Individualised Treatment Plan: Based on our assessment findings, our physiotherapists will develop a personalised treatment plan designed specifically for you. This plan takes into account your unique needs, goals, and lifestyle. It encompasses a variety of evidence-based techniques and interventions to address your pain and promote healing. This active approach is focused on early pain relief and mobility - we aim to get you moving as quickly as possible, as research suggests this results in a better prognosis and reduced period of disability.

  • Targeted Pain Management: Our physiotherapists will employ a range of techniques to alleviate pain and promote comfort. Manual therapy techniques, including joint mobilisations and soft tissue techniques, can help reduce muscle tension and improve joint function.

  • Exercise Prescription: Exercises also play a crucial role in your recovery journey. Our physiotherapists will safely guide you through a series of specific exercises targeting the muscles, joints, and tissues involved in your back or neck pain. These exercises help improve strength, and stability, and mobility, providing long-term relief and also aiming to prevent future recurrences.

  • A Holistic Management Plan: Including self-management strategies, home exercises, stretching routines, sleep management, fatigue management, a review of current exercise regimes. By actively participating in your rehabilitation and adopting preventive measures, you can enjoy a pain-free and active lifestyle for the long term.

  • Postural & Ergonomic Guidance: Strengthening postural muscles, moving regularly and optimising ergonomics may be another aspect of managing your back and neck pain. Our physiotherapists can educate you on proper body mechanics, postural awareness, and ergonomics specific to your daily activities and work environment. By making simple adjustments and adopting healthier habits, you can minimise strain on your spine and reduce pain.

  • Flare up management: A discussion about how to prevent future episodes and flare ups - an important component of your treatment at Total Physiotherapy.

  • Support Return to Exercise: 1:1 sessions at Thrive Gym to look at your form and technique with weight training. This includes exercise programming for management of back pain.

  • Referral to our Thrive Spines exercise class: A specific pilates-style exercise class for those with back/neck/thoracic pain.
